Helicopter Tour Over the Kintamani Volcano and Lake Batur

The Kintamani highlands hold one of the most extraordinary volcanic landscapes in Southeast Asia. An ancient eruption created a caldera 13 kilometers wide. Inside it, a second volcano has grown. Inside that, a crater lake has formed. From a helicopter, this geological sequence is laid out below you like a textbook diagram come to life.

Flying Over Kintamani Volcano

The Batur caldera and its volcanic landscape is unlike anywhere else in Bali. At an elevation of over 1,000 meters, the highland air is cool and often misty. The caldera was formed by two successive volcanic collapses, the first approximately 29,000 years ago, the second around 20,000 years ago. What remained after these collapses was a vast bowl-shaped depression — the caldera — that now contains Lake Batur, Mount Batur, and several smaller volcanic cones. From a helicopter flying over this landscape, the geological scale becomes comprehensible in a way that never quite registers from the ground.

The Caldera from Above

The Batur caldera measures approximately 13 kilometers across at its widest point. The caldera rim rises steeply from the caldera floor on all sides, and from the road that runs along the southern rim, you can look north across the entire caldera. But from a helicopter above the caldera, the full circular structure is visible at once. You can see the caldera wall, the lake, Mount Batur rising from the caldera floor, the village of Trunyan on the lake shore (famous for its unusual burial practices), and on clear days, the higher caldera of Mount Agung visible to the southeast. The contrast between the scale of the caldera and the tiny villages on its rim is one of the most perspective-shifting sights on the flight.

Mount Batur: Active Volcano

Mount Batur stands at 1,717 meters and is one of Bali's two active volcanoes (the other being Mount Agung). Its last significant eruption was in 2000, which deposited lava flows on the northwestern flanks. Earlier flows from 1994 and 1974 have created extensive black lava fields between Mount Batur and the lake shore. From a helicopter, these lava fields are dramatically clear: black channels of solidified lava cutting through the older vegetation and eventually stopping at the lake shore. The summit of Mount Batur has multiple craters, and the main crater is often clear enough to observe from helicopter altitude. Thermal activity is occasionally visible as faint heat shimmer above the summit.

Lake Batur: Sacred Crater Lake

Lake Batur is the largest lake in Bali, occupying the northeastern portion of the caldera floor. It is roughly crescent-shaped, approximately 8 kilometers long and 2 kilometers wide. The lake's color ranges from deep blue to turquoise green depending on the light and the weather. Sacred springs at the southern end of the lake are considered holy by the Balinese and are used for ritual purification. The lake is also a major source of irrigation water for central and eastern Bali through a network of underground springs that emerge at lower elevations. From a helicopter, the lake and the volcano side by side — separated only by a narrow band of volcanic rock — create one of the most unusual landscapes in Indonesia.

Kintamani Village and Highlands

The Kintamani highlands are characterized by cool temperatures, dense pine and bamboo forest, and a distinctive highland culture that differs noticeably from the lowland Balinese. The village of Kintamani on the caldera rim is the main viewpoint for ground-level visitors. From a helicopter, you can see the full sequence of the landscape: the highland market town, the caldera rim road, the dramatic drop to the caldera floor below, and the panoramic view to the south coast of Bali across the entire width of the island. On clear mornings, this view from the Kintamani highlands is spectacular — and from a helicopter at the same elevation as the caldera rim, you see it from a completely different angle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I see inside Mount Batur's crater from the helicopter?

On clear mornings, the summit craters of Mount Batur are visible from helicopter altitude. Mount Batur has a main crater and several secondary craters on its summit. We fly close enough to see the crater structure clearly, subject to weather and visibility conditions.

Is the Kintamani helicopter flight the same as the sunrise trek?

They are very different experiences. The sunrise trek takes 2-3 hours hiking in the dark to reach the summit and see the sunrise over the caldera. The helicopter flight takes 45 minutes total and gives you a panoramic aerial perspective of the entire caldera landscape at once. Many visitors who have done the sunrise trek find the helicopter view gives them a completely new understanding of the landscape they trekked through.

What is the weather like around Kintamani for helicopter tours?

The Kintamani highlands sit above 1,000 meters and frequently generate their own weather. Morning flights before 09:00 are consistently the clearest. By mid-morning, cloud often builds around the caldera rim. Afternoon visibility is variable. We always check conditions before confirming tours to this area and will reschedule if the forecast is poor.

Does the Volcano & Lake Tour cover both Mount Agung and Mount Batur?

Yes. The Volcano & Lake Tour (45 min, $380) is specifically designed to cover both Bali volcanoes: Mount Agung to the east and Mount Batur/Lake Batur in the Kintamani caldera. This is our most geologically focused flight.
