Helicopter Tour Over Nusa Penida Island

Nusa Penida is a rugged island 20 kilometers off Bali's southeastern coast. Its cliffs are higher, its waters bluer, and its landscape more dramatic than anywhere on the mainland. From a helicopter, its wild beauty is complete.

Flying Over Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida has become one of the most photographed islands in Southeast Asia, famous for its T-Rex cliff, natural arch, and impossibly blue water. But ground-level tourism misses most of what makes the island extraordinary. The interior is a high limestone plateau, the cliffs drop hundreds of meters to the sea, and the island's coastline has dozens of dramatic formations that are only accessible by boat or visible from the air. Our Nusa Penida Aerial Tour crosses the Badung Strait from Bali and gives you a complete perspective on this remarkable island.

Kelingking Beach: The T-Rex Formation

The defining image of Nusa Penida is the T-Rex cliff at Kelingking Beach on the island's southwestern coast. A limestone peninsula juts into the sea in a shape that resembles a Tyrannosaurus Rex head and neck, with a hidden white sand beach at the 'feet' 200 meters below the cliff top. From the land viewpoint, you see the dinosaur profile from the side. From a helicopter, you can circle the entire formation, see the beach below from directly above, and observe how the cliff connects to the main island coastline. The turquoise color of the water at the base of the cliffs, contrasting with the brilliant white limestone, is striking even on overcast days.

Broken Beach and Angel's Billabong

A short distance east of Kelingking, two of Nusa Penida's most unusual geological features appear: Broken Beach (Pantai Pasih Uug) and Angel's Billabong. Broken Beach is a circular cove where the sea has eroded a natural arch through the limestone headland, creating a 30-meter-wide opening through which the sea surges. From above, the circular pool and the arch opening look like a natural amphitheater. Angel's Billabong, adjacent to Broken Beach, is a natural rock pool at sea level that fills with seawater at high tide, creating a clear emerald pool. From the air, the geometry of these formations — the circle, the arch, the pool — is even more striking than from the ground.

The Southwestern Cliffs

The entire southwestern coast of Nusa Penida is a continuous cliff face, in places over 200 meters high. The cliff tops are mostly bare limestone with sparse scrub, while the cliff faces are sheer and overhang the sea in some sections. At the base of the cliffs, the sea erodes the limestone into caves, arches, and sea stacks. From a helicopter following this coastline, the scale of the cliffs is staggering. Small fishing boats that venture close to the base look like matchsticks. The clarity of the water below the cliffs allows the reef formations and coral to be visible from altitude on calm days.

Crystal Bay and the North Coast

Crystal Bay on the northwest coast of Nusa Penida is famous for diving encounters with ocean sunfish (mola mola). From a helicopter, the bay's exceptional water clarity is immediately visible — the coral formations and sandy bottom are visible at considerable depth in the shallow areas near the beach. The north coast of the island contrasts sharply with the dramatic south. Here the land slopes more gently to the sea, and there are small fishing villages and coconut plantations on the coastal flats. The town of Sampalan on the northeastern coast is the island's main settlement, its jetties and boats clearly visible from the air.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to fly to Nusa Penida from Bali?

The crossing from Bali's south coast to Nusa Penida takes approximately 8-10 minutes by helicopter. The full 45-minute tour includes the crossing, the main island highlights (Kelingking, Broken Beach, Angel's Billabong, Crystal Bay), and the return flight. The fast crossing by helicopter contrasts sharply with the 30-45 minute fast boat ride from Sanur.

What can I see at Kelingking Beach from the helicopter?

From the helicopter you can see the full T-Rex cliff formation, the white sand beach at its base, the color contrast between the white limestone and turquoise water, and the surrounding southwestern coastline. You can also fly directly above the cliff top where the ground viewpoint is located, getting a birds-eye view of the viewpoint itself.

Is the water really that blue over Nusa Penida?

Yes. The deep waters of the Badung Strait and the Indian Ocean currents that flow past Nusa Penida create exceptional water clarity and an intense blue-green color. The color is caused by the depth and the mineral-free nature of the open-ocean water. It photographs exactly as it looks — no filters needed.

Can I combine the Nusa Penida flight with a Bali mainland tour?

The Full Island Tour (60 min, $500) combines a Bali mainland circuit with a Nusa Penida overflight. Alternatively, you can book the Nusa Penida Aerial Tour on its own (45 min, $400) as a focused island experience.
